Iron plays a major role in a healthy immune system, so low levels of the mineral make you more prone to infections. Red blood cells help transport oxygen to the spleen, which is one place where infections can be fought off. Without enough oxygen, the spleen will not be able to function properly.
Red blood cells carry oxygen to the lymph nodes, thereby fighting white blood cell infection. When you have an iron deficiency, your white blood cells do not produce as well as they should. This can weaken you because you do not get enough oxygen, increasing your risk of infection.
